Roman conquest of Britain

In AD 43 an army sent by Claudius under Aulus Plautius landed in Britain; over the next forty years Rome conquered most of the island as far as the Scottish Highlands, where Agricola won the battle of Mons Graupius.

The invasion force — probably four legions with auxiliaries, landing most likely at Rutupiae (Richborough) in Kent — defeated the Catuvellauni. Claudius came in person for the final advance and entered Camulodunum (Colchester), which became the first capital of the new province; eleven British kings submitted to him. Resistance continued under Caratacus until his defeat in AD 50, and the revolt of Boudica in 60/61 nearly drove the Romans from the island.

Under the governor Agricola the legions pushed into Caledonia and defeated its tribes at Mons Graupius in 83 or 84, but the far north was never held; the frontier eventually settled on the Tyne–Solway line, later marked by Hadrian’s Wall.
