Al-Mas'udi
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Mas'udi, historian and geographer born in Baghdad, sometimes called ‘the Herodotus of the Arabs’. From 915/916 he travelled through Iran, Sind and western India, Arabia, Syria and the lands around the Caspian and, by his own account, sailed to East Africa, before settling in Fustat around 942. Of his many works only The Meadows of Gold and the late Kitab al-tanbih wa-l-ishraf survive.
