Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah

Founder and first sultan of the Bahmani Sultanate (1347–1358), known before his accession as Hasan Gangu and by the title Zafar Khan. An amir of humble and obscure origin in the service of Muhammad bin Tughluq, he led the rebel ‘amirs of a hundred’ of the Deccan, was enthroned at Daulatabad on 3 August 1347 and made Gulbarga his capital. Later writers gave him descent from the ancient Persian king Bahman or linked his name with a Brahmin patron called Gangu.
