Aryabhata
Indian mathematician and astronomer, born in 476, the first of the great astronomers of India’s classical age. His only surviving work, the Aryabhatiya, covers arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry and astronomy; he belonged to the school of Kusumapura, usually identified with Pataliputra, while the 7th-century commentator Bhaskara I calls him ‘one from Ashmaka’.
