Ashina
Ruling clan of the Turks. According to the Chinese histories, the Ashina, a few hundred families strong, lived on the southern slopes of the Altai as ironworkers of the Rouran (modern historians date their settlement there to the mid-5th century); in 552 their leader Tumen (Bumin) overthrew the Rouran and founded the Turkic Khaganate, and khagans of the Ashina line ruled the steppe until the 8th century.
