Avars
Nomadic confederation from the Eurasian steppe — the Pannonian Avars, the Obri of the Rus’ chronicles. From 567–568 their khaganate in the Carpathian Basin dominated the Slavs of Central Europe and raided Byzantium; it was broken by Charlemagne’s campaigns of the 790s.
