Person1125–1167
Basava (Basavanna)
Kannada poet, mystic and statesman of the 12th century, chief minister of the Kalachuri king Bijjala II at Kalyana, revered as the founder — or, in the view of many historians, the great reformer — of the Lingayat (Virashaiva) tradition. In his vachanas, short devotional sayings addressed to Shiva as Kudala Sangama, he rejected caste and temple ritual, extolled the dignity of labour and gave women an equal place among the devotees.
