Basil the Great
Bishop (metropolitan) of Caesarea in Cappadocia from 370, theologian and, with Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory of Nazianzus, one of the Cappadocian Fathers. He stood up for the Nicene faith against the emperor Valens, shaped monastic life in the Greek Church and founded the Basileias, a hospital and poorhouse outside Caesarea.
