Bhaskara II (Bhaskaracharya)
Indian mathematician and astronomer (born 1114), called Bhaskaracharya, ‘Bhaskara the teacher’, the son and pupil of the astronomer Maheshvara. In 1150, at the age of 36, he completed the Siddhanta Shiromani. It is usually described as having four parts, though the first two — the Lilavati on arithmetic and the Bijaganita on algebra — have their own titles and often circulated as separate works; they are regarded as the most important mathematical treatises of medieval India. Later he wrote the astronomical work Karanakutuhala. He is said to have headed the astronomical observatory at Ujjain; in 1207 his grandson Changadeva founded a school for the study of his works.
