Brahmagupta
Indian astronomer and mathematician from Bhillamala (Bhinmal) in western India, the son of Jishnugupta. In 628, at the age of thirty, he wrote the Brahmasphutasiddhanta, with the earliest known rules for calculating with zero and negative numbers, and in 665 the Khandakhadyaka, a practical handbook of astronomy. Translated into Arabic in the 8th century, his works brought Indian astronomy and arithmetic to Baghdad.
