Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor
King of Bohemia and King of the Romans from 1346, Holy Roman Emperor from 1355 to 1378, of the House of Luxembourg. He escaped wounded from Crécy, where his father John of Bohemia was killed, made Prague his capital, founding its New Town and in 1348 its university, the first in Central Europe, and in 1356 issued the Golden Bull, which regulated the election of the emperors for more than four centuries.
