Cumans
Nomadic Turkic-speaking people of the Black Sea steppes (Kipchaks, Polovtsians); they first appeared on the borders of Rus’ in 1055, were allies of the Bulgarian tsar Kaloyan and of the Russian princes on the Kalka, and lost their independence during the Mongols’ western campaign of 1236–1242.
