Person1265–1321
Dante Alighieri
Florentine poet, writer and philosopher (1265–1321), the author of the Divine Comedy. A White Guelph and one of the priors of Florence in 1300, he was condemned to exile in 1302, when the Black Guelphs seized power, and spent the rest of his life wandering through Italy — at Verona under the della Scala and finally at Ravenna, where he died. His poetry in the Tuscan vernacular and his defence of the vernacular in De vulgari eloquentia earned him the name of “father” of the Italian language.
