Emirate of Crete
Muslim state founded on Crete by Andalusian exiles in the 820s, with its capital at Chandax (Heraklion). Nominally under Abbasid suzerainty but in practice independent, it was a base for corsairs raiding the Aegean until the Byzantine reconquest of 961.
