Emperor Kanmu
Prince Yamabe, son of Emperor Kōnin and of Takano no Niigasa, whose family claimed descent from the kings of Baekje; emperor of Japan from 781 to 806. He moved the capital from Nara to Nagaoka-kyō in 784 and to Heian-kyō, modern Kyoto, in 794, sent Sakanoue no Tamuramaro against the Emishi of the north-east and supported the monks Saichō and Kūkai, founders of the Tendai and Shingon schools.
