Emperor Shirakawa
Seventy-second emperor of Japan (r. 1073–1087), son of Emperor Go-Sanjō. After abdicating in favour of his young son Horikawa he went on to direct affairs from his own palace, taking Buddhist vows in 1096, and dominated the court through the reigns of three emperors until his death in 1129 — the first of the ‘cloistered’ rulers of the insei system, holding power for 43 years.
