Empress Genmei
Princess Abe, daughter of Emperor Tenji and widow of Prince Kusakabe, who took the throne in 707 after the death of her son, Emperor Monmu. Her reign saw the first Wadō coins (708), the move of the capital to Heijō-kyō (710), the presentation of the Kojiki (712) and the order to compile the provincial gazetteers, the Fudoki (713). In 715 she abdicated in favour of her daughter, Empress Genshō.
