Person800–880
Fatima al-Fihri
Daughter of a wealthy merchant from Kairouan who settled in Fez, also called Umm al-Banin. The 14th-century chronicle Rawd al-Qirtas credits her with founding the al-Qarawiyyin Mosque in 857 or 859 with her inheritance, and she is said to have died around 880; since she is first mentioned centuries after her death, some historians treat the story as legend or doubt her existence.
