Person1307–1388
Firuz Shah Tughlaq
Sultan of Delhi (1351–1388), a cousin of Muhammad bin Tughluq, raised to the throne by the army in Sind after Muhammad's death. He made two expeditions to Bengal without annexing it, did not try to win back the Deccan, abolished many cesses, enforced the sharia and the jizya, and became famous as a builder of canals, wells and new towns, among them Hisar, Jaunpur and Firozabad at Delhi. Chroniclers praised his reign as an age of plenty; modern historians also see in it the decline of the sultanate's military power.
