Francis of Assisi
Son of a prosperous silk merchant of Assisi who renounced his inheritance to live in poverty and preach; founder of the Friars Minor (Franciscans) and, with Clare of Assisi, of the Poor Clares. He died at the Porziuncola in 1226 and was canonized in 1228.
