Gerard of Cremona
Italian scholar who went to Toledo in search of Ptolemy's Almagest, learned Arabic there and remained in the city until his death. By different counts he turned more than seventy works of Greek and Arabic astronomy, mathematics, philosophy and medicine into Latin — among them the Almagest, Euclid's Elements and al-Khwarizmi's algebra.
