Person1313–1375
Giovanni Boccaccio
Italian writer and humanist (1313–1375), born in Florence or Certaldo, the author of the Decameron. After a youth in Naples, where his father worked for the Bardi bank, he returned to Florence in 1341. From 1350 a friend and disciple of Petrarch, he served the Florentine republic on embassies, encouraged the study of Greek and promoted the cult of Dante, whose life he wrote and whose Comedy he expounded in public lectures in Florence in 1373–1374. With Dante and Petrarch he is counted among the “three crowns” of Italian literature.
