Grande Armée
The main field army of Napoleonic France. The name first appeared in orders of late August 1805; the army was broken up in 1808, reassembled in 1811–1812 for the invasion of Russia and ceased to exist after Napoleon’s abdication in April 1814 (in 1815 Napoleon’s army was called the Army of the North).
