Person
Gudit
Queen remembered in Ethiopian tradition as Gudit or Yodit (Judith), also called Isato, ‘fire’, who in the 10th century is said to have killed the king of Aksum, burned its churches and ruled in his place for many years. A queen who had killed the king of the Habasha is mentioned by the contemporary geographer Ibn Hawqal; her origin and religion are disputed — the tradition that she was Jewish is late, and many historians see in her a pagan queen from the south, perhaps of Damot.
