Hafez
Persian lyric poet of Shiraz (c. 1315–1390), Shams al-Din Muhammad, whose pen name refers to his knowing the Qur’an by heart. A master of the ghazal, he wrote of love, wine and the hypocrisy of the outwardly pious under the Injuid and Muzaffarid rulers of Fars. His Divan, probably compiled after his death, is one of the most widely read books of Persian poetry and is still consulted for divination.
