Ibn al-Nafis
Physician born in Damascus, where he studied at the Nuri hospital; from 1236 he worked in Cairo and in old age headed the new Mansuri hospital there. In a commentary on Ibn Sina’s Canon he gave the earliest known description of the pulmonary circulation; he also began a vast medical encyclopaedia, al-Shamil, and wrote a philosophical novel.
