Ibn Taymiyya
Hanbali theologian and jurist (1263–1328), born in Harran, whose family fled to Damascus before the Mongols in 1269. He preached jihad against the Ilkhanid invaders of Syria and fought at Marj al-Saffar (1303), attacked philosophy, speculative theology, the cult of saints and Shi’ism, and was repeatedly imprisoned by the Mamluk authorities; he died in prison in the Citadel of Damascus. A controversial figure in his own time, he became a central authority for modern Salafi movements.
