Irenaeus of Lyon
Greek churchman from Smyrna who succeeded the martyred Pothinus as bishop of Lugdunum (Lyon); his Against Heresies (c. 180) refuted the Gnostics and is the earliest witness to the recognition of all four canonical Gospels.
