John III Doukas Vatatzes
Emperor of Nicaea from 1221 or 1222, son-in-law and successor of Theodore I Laskaris; he strengthened the economy, took Thessalonica in 1246 and encircled the Latin Empire. He is venerated as Saint John the Merciful.
