Kashyapa I
King of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka (477–495 by the chronicle’s reckoning; 473–495 in some works), son of King Dhatusena by a non-royal consort. He seized the throne in a palace coup, had his father put to death and, fearing his half-brother Moggallana — the rightful heir, who had fled to India — made the rock of Sigiriya his fortified capital; he is remembered as Kashyapa the Parricide. When Moggallana returned and raised an army in 495, Kashyapa was defeated and took his own life.
