Person1321–1363
Liu Futong
Leader of the northern Red Turbans (1321–1363). With the White Lotus teacher Han Shantong, whom his circle proclaimed a descendant of the Song emperor Huizong, he plotted a rising in 1351; when the plot was discovered and Han was seized, Liu rose in revolt at Yingzhou under the sign of the red turban. In 1355 he enthroned Han’s son Han Lin'er as emperor of a restored Song and held the old Song capital Kaifeng in 1358–1359; by the usual account, he was killed at Anfeng in 1363 by the army of the rival rebel Zhang Shicheng, although according to the Dictionary of Ming Biography he may have survived and drowned with Han Lin'er in 1367.
