Martin of Tours
Third bishop of Tours (from 371), born at Savaria in Pannonia. He served in the Roman cavalry in Gaul, became a disciple of Hilary of Poitiers and founded the monasteries of Ligugé and Marmoutier; the Life by Sulpicius Severus spread his fame, and he became the patron saint of many communities across Europe.
