Mexica
Nahuatl-speaking people of central Mexico, the core of those usually called the Aztecs. According to their traditions they came from Aztlan, a legendary homeland in the north, entered the Valley of Mexico in the 13th century and, traditionally in 1325, founded Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco, which became the leading city of the Triple Alliance — the Aztec Empire.
