Nasir al-Din al-Tusi

Persian scholar from Tus. He served the Nizari Ismailis in Quhistan and at Alamut, entered Hulagu’s service after Alamut fell in 1256, founded the observatory at Maragheh in 1259 and directed the compilation of the Ilkhanid astronomical tables. He wrote on astronomy, on mathematics — treating trigonometry as a discipline in its own right — and on ethics and philosophy, and died in Baghdad in 1274.
