Nichiren
Japanese Buddhist monk from Awa province, founder of Nichiren Buddhism, who taught the supremacy of the Lotus Sutra and the chanting of its title, “Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō”. His attacks on other schools and his warnings to the Kamakura government brought him exile to Izu (1261–1263) and to Sado (1271–1274); he died at Ikegami.
