Parakramabahu I

King of Sri Lanka (1153–1186), a grandson of Vijayabahu I through his mother, who rose from ruling the south-western province of Dakkhinadesa to win the throne of Polonnaruwa in a long civil war and by about 1157–1158 united the whole island. He rebuilt Polonnaruwa, carried out vast irrigation works, reformed and reunited the Buddhist monastic order and sent expeditions to Burma and southern India; the chronicle Culavamsa glorifies him at length.
