Saint Patrick
Romano-British missionary and bishop of the 5th century, the “Apostle of Ireland”. Carried off to Ireland as a slave at about sixteen, he escaped and later returned there as a bishop; his Confession and Letter to the soldiers of Coroticus are the only generally accepted sources for his life. He is the patron saint of Ireland, venerated on 17 March.
