Sergius of Radonezh
Monk and hegumen, born Bartholomew into a boyar family of Rostov, who founded the Trinity monastery north-east of Moscow and revived cenobitic monastic life in north-eastern Rus’; his disciples founded many new monasteries. Revered in his lifetime by princes and metropolitans, he became one of the most venerated saints of Russia.
