Simeon Stylites the Elder
Syrian ascetic born at Sis in Cilicia who around 423 went up a pillar near Telanissos, north-west of Aleppo, and lived on pillars until his death in 459; crowds of pilgrims came to him, and he became the model of the stylites, the pillar saints.
