Sogdians
Iranian people of Sogdiana, the land of Samarkand and Bukhara between the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya. From the 4th century they were among the leading merchants of the Silk Road, with colonies stretching from Central Asia to China; the “Ancient Letters” of about 313 are the earliest substantial texts in their language.
