Suryavarman I
Khmer king (c. 1002–1050), a prince of uncertain origin who won the throne of Angkor in a war of succession that lasted about nine years and dated his accession to 1002. He bound the officials of the realm by a sworn oath, extended Khmer rule westward into the Chao Phraya (Menam) basin and built at Angkor, Preah Vihear and elsewhere. A patron of Buddhism who maintained the royal cult of the devaraja, he received the posthumous name Nirvanapada.
