Taira no Masakado
Warrior magnate of the Kantō from the Kanmu Taira, a branch of the imperial line reduced to commoner status. After years of feuding with his kinsmen he seized the provincial offices of Hitachi, Shimotsuke and Kōzuke in 940, proclaimed himself ‘New Emperor’ and was killed in battle the same year; he was later revered as a deity at the Kanda Shrine in Edo.
