Thomas Becket
Chancellor of Henry II and from 1162 archbishop of Canterbury. As archbishop he defended the rights of the Church against the king, repudiated the Constitutions of Clarendon (1164) and spent six years in exile in France; four weeks after his return he was murdered in his cathedral by four of the king's knights, and in 1173 Pope Alexander III canonized him.
