People / group
Thule people
Arctic people of whale hunters, the ancestors of the modern Inuit and Yupik, who arose on the coasts of Alaska and spread east across the Canadian Arctic to Greenland, replacing the earlier Dorset culture. They hunted whales, walrus and seals from skin boats — the umiak and the kayak — travelled by dog sled and built winter houses framed with whale bones; they are named after Thule in north-western Greenland, where their remains were first found.
