Tiwanaku

Pre-Columbian polity centred on the city of Tiwanaku near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, in present-day Bolivia. From about 600 it was the centre of a culture whose influence reached southern Peru, northern Chile and the eastern valleys, with colonies such as Moquegua; it collapsed around 1000, though some date its end to about 1150. Whether it was an empire, a state or a looser federation is debated.
