Yaqut al-Hamawi
Geographer and biographer who wrote in Arabic, of Byzantine Greek birth: enslaved as a child and educated by his master, a Baghdad merchant, he became a bookseller and traveller once freed. Author of the geographical dictionary Mu‘jam al-buldan and of a dictionary of men of letters; he died in Aleppo.
