Person

Yuri Dolgoruky

Son of Vladimir Monomakh, sent by his father in 1108 to rule the Rostov–Suzdal land in the north-east, where he founded Pereslavl-Zalessky, Yuriev-Polsky and Dmitrov. His nickname, ‘the Long-Armed’, reflects his far-reaching ambitions: he fought his nephew Iziaslav for Kyiv, held it in 1149–1151 with an interruption and again from 1155, and died there on 15 May 1157, falling ill after a feast. Moscow first appears in the chronicle as his meeting place with Sviatoslav Olgovich in 1147.
