Zhu Xi
Chinese philosopher, historian and official of the Southern Song, the central figure of Neo-Confucianism. Born in Youxi in Fujian, a jinshi graduate of 1148 and a student of Li Tong, an heir of the Cheng brothers' teaching, he spent most of his life teaching and writing rather than in office; his commentaries on the Four Books were the basis of the civil service examinations from 1313 to 1905.
