Founder of the Ming dynasty (1328–1398), emperor from 1368 under the era name Hongwu. Born to a poor peasant family in Haozhou, orphaned by an epidemic in 1344 and for a time a novice monk, he joined the Red Turbans in 1352, took Nanjing in 1356, defeated his rivals and in 1368 proclaimed the Ming.
