In the 1st century AD the largest cities of the Americas were rising in the highlands of Mexico: Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico and the Zapotec capital of Monte Albán in Oaxaca. On the desert coast of Peru the Nazca were drawing their lines on the pampa, and in the northern valleys the Moche culture was taking shape. Apart from Maya and Zapotec inscriptions these societies left few written records, and their dates come mostly from archaeology; where sources disagree, dates are given as ranges and the descriptions explain why.
